Introduction To Our Playlists: Northern Soul

Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that originated in the British fashion scene in Northern Ireland and Midlands of England in the late 1960s, based on a specific style of African-American soul music, especially the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat based on up-tempo (100 bpm or higher) or American soul music from northern cities like Detroit, Chicago, etc.

Northern Soul is associated with certain dance styles and fashions that emerged in the underground rhythm and soul scene in venues such as Manchester's Twisted Wheel in the late 1960s. The scene, and the dancing and fashion associated with it, quickly spread to other British dance halls and nightclubs such as Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca (Highland Hall) and Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent).

Northern soul music consists primarily of Afro-American soul records from the 60s and 70s. The more obscure the better, with an emphasis on reshoots and a fast pace. These records are like pop records out of Motown, but more obscure. Usually recorded on smaller regional labels.
