Shingles, the fiery rash that strikes a specific area of skin, is caused by the reawakening of the chickenpox virus (varicella zoster). This sneaky virus lies dormant in our nervous system after infecting us in our younger years.
But here's the shocking truth: a staggering 36% of respondents had no clue that anyone who had chickenpox could be plagued by shingles later in life. Can you believe it? With a whopping 90% of adults having experienced chickenpox at some point, the risk of developing shingles is real.
Shingles affects 1 in 4 people in their lifetime, with higher risk for those aged 50 and above. Patients with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk, but only 57% of people are aware of this. Additionally, 33% do not know about serious complications like post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which occurs in around 20% of cases and involves nerve pain lasting for 90 days or more.
